Saturday 24th June - walk ***** Levington to Nacton Shores - sunny and hot.

We got the heads up late yesterday evening from long time windsurfing mate Jason that the Pin Mill barge race was starting today at 6.30 which was too good an opportunity to miss so we set the alarm for 5.30. Mag had a restless night and was up really early watering her garden, so with a flask made and a pastry warmed up we left Felixstowe at 5.50 and had to lift the marina barrier when we got there. It was a beautiful morning as we parked near the marina entrance with barges already jockeying for position up-river at Pin Mill. We enjoyed our cuppa and pastry as the first barges made their way slowly towards us in the light breeze, there were 3 starts in all we think with around a dozen old boats racing, as always it is great to watch, sitting on the bench watching the action which also included a few yachts and three small fishing boats heading out onto the stunning River Orwell:) With the first three barges past us and heading to Felixstowe docks we set off on a walk around 7 with loads of noisy oyster catchers in the mud with the tide dropping fast! We needed a sweatshirt on to start with but the temperature soon again to raise as we headed along the river path to Levington creek still watching the barges sail past, just us and a few dog walkers, just perfect. There were 5 egrets in the small lagoon and some reed buntings and gold finches but no deer today. Around the creek and onto the beach which was in the shade nearly making it to Nacton Shores before returning by the higher path through the trees, no woodpeckers today but we saw a couple of squirrels. Back across the reed beds with the temperature now soaring and in the end we were pleased to get back to the van, knackered after walking 4.60 miles but well worth it, we love an early start. Then home for breakfast, exercises in the garden and relaxing in the sun. Looking really hot tomorrow, getting to 30 degrees with maybe enough wind for a windsurf, fingers crossed, must sort out a shortie wetsuit!
